The Compositor from Student Academy Award winner, John Mattiuzzi, arrives in the UK this year at No/Gloss Film Festival. Written, directed, produced AND starring in the lead role is John himself, playing the character Paul Paxton, a neurotic, slave artist working in the film industry, who begins to question his own existence, and the realities that he is forced to create.
The Compositor is a sci-fi fantasy film combining elements of VFX green screen technology and animation. John reckons it’s a “neo-magico-surreal-autobiographical-futuristic-contemporary-psychological-experimental-coming-ofage-in-a-dark-comedy-fantasy-film aka an experimental narrative” but we think it’s a brilliant, refreshing take on the standard, autobiographical narrative – the film is based on John’s battle with a debilitating, psychosomatic condition, whilst he was pursuing a career in film.
According to John: “As an obsessive film compositor by day, I started to see thematic connections. A compositor creates illusions, complicating divisions between what is real, and what is not. This became a major metaphorical driving force behind visualizing the mindbody condition. And don’t forget, working day and night at a computer, training to become a compositor in real and fictional life would have to exacerbate the condition, bring it to a climax? It seemed a perfect narrative fit, a way to test the theory and overcome the mind-body disorder at virtually the same time. And that’s the story of, the story behind and the one within the film, the Compositor.”
Apart from the well deserved win at the 40th Student Academy Award (Oscar) last week, The Compositor has also received the Official Selection laurel at Slamdance Festival 2013 – not bad for a crowd-funded film!
THE COMPOSITOR is an autobiographical sci-fi fantasy film that follows Paul Paxton, a slave artist working in the film industry, who begins to question his own existence, and the realities that he is forced to create. These questions lead him to anger, and that anger, quickly to rage. With little hope and nothing to lose, Paul rages war against the very same system he is sworn to uphold, in a desperate attempt to free himself from the suffocating grip of physical and psychological slavery.
